Update on New Extension Project was delayed by 2 lockdowns due to Covid- plus a further delay of 7 weeks due to difficulties with changing windows and doors suppliers & supply of steel for the project. We paid €2500 contribution to the project- then were requested verbally but not in writing to pay a further €11, 500 by Mayo County Council. Michael Ring & Peter Flynn helped sort this out for us with the council. Builders on site now- 3 weeks work left to complete job. P McN praised the building Contractor James Heneghan & Mary who have worked really well with us on this project. General Updates
Killeen Lotto update- wasn’t run from March to October 2020. Subscription only as no pubs open- draw done on Friday nights and posted on Facebook- to be reviewed if we will return to selling envelopes in the community and holding the draw in P. Dans now pubs have re-opened
Tarring around Killeen outside the cemeteries & parking spaces being done soon- supported by Councillor Christy Hyland
Fire fighting equipment in the Community Centre tested and certified
Lease of building to Killeen Childcare Ltd. Valid until 2022

Classes – ran since October 2020 on Line on Zoom – funded by the Mayo Sligo Education & Training Committee. Big success- free of charge to participants. Keep Fit & Yoga with Shauna O’Malley & Lorraine Harney. Nicole Dunwood did Yoga/mindfulness with children of the Killeen National School during school lockdown. More classes to follow when restrictions lift hopefully in First Aid & computer classes in Autumn 2021.
Meeting with Elected Councillors was planned for March 2020 but cancelled due to Covid- may be rescheduled later- EOM will contact the Councillors again to arrange- sooner rather than later. Many important issued to be brought to Coucillors attention- i.e. road conditions, plans for a busy stacation summer to name a few.
Grants Obtained purchased the following items:
Strimmers x 2, Dehumidifiers x 2, Sanitizing fogger for cleaning x 1 (funded by Community Enhancement Programme 2020)
New laptop & New sign for outside of the Community Centre (due soon)- Funded by National Lottery Small Grants Scheme
New computers & printer for the computer room – Funded by MAED ( Mitigating Against Educational Disadvantage Fund 2020 & Mayo Sligo Leitrim Education Board
New battery for defibrillator purchased May 2021- cost over €300- defibrillator will need replacing next year
Shrawee Bridge, Cregganbawn Jim Egan spoke about the recent railings fitted on the Shrawee Bridge that has narrowed it and made it difficult for large vehicles to pass through. It was installed without any consultation with locals. Jim Egan thanked M O’G for all his work on this to date- he said it’s great that a community group such as the Killeen Community Council exists to support residents at times like this. M O’G updated the group on recent developments- he met Councillor Christy Hyland,, Niall Corrigan & Engineer Kieran Irwin at the bridge today. A previous on site meeting proved unsuccessful. Kieran Irwin Engineer is to communicate with O’Connor Consulting Engineers, Galway on Monday next June 14th on a proposal to remove the railings for now and progress with a new bridge in 2022- funding to be sought by the local authority for that. Kieran Irwin will report back to Councillor Christy Hyland on our behalf on the outcome of this meeting. Paddy Commins from Mayo County Council told M O’G that if they agree to remove the railings that will happen fast. BK said lots of money spent for a poor result with the new railings. P MCN stated that the Killeen Community Council will support the residents in Cregganbawn to solve this problem- as it affects the wider Killeen Community. Local landowners in Cregganbawn will co-operate to solve this problem where necessary.
Election of Officers Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary, Assistant Secretary all stepped down. Bernie Coyne (BC) & Sal O’Malley (S O’M) and all present proposed that they remain in place for one more year and all present seconded it. Officers agreed to remain in place until March 2022. Community Council Elections due in 2022. Any other business
Charities Regulator Governance Code- Killeen Community Council is a registered charity and are obliged to implement & comply with this code to maintain this status. Copies were eMailed / distributed to the Company Directors in November 2020 as all must read and be familiar with it. Most requirements are in place - regular minuted meetings to continue to comply with this code. Hard copies of code issued to those with no eMail address.
Pride of Place 2021- we entered this national competition under the Wellbeing Category in April 2021- for all the free on line classes we provided during the COVID lockdowns. Applications submitted to Mayo County Council who then selected us to represent Mayo in this category. 3 other Mayo communities were selected under different categories. 2000 word submission to be provided by June 2021- judging at national level in July/August 2021.
Thank you card received from Norah Gavin- the Community Council sent flowers & gift to Norah to mark her retirement from the teaching staff of the Sancta Maria College, Louisburgh
TJJ & AK said the new lighting outside the Killeen Church very bright - PMcN agreed to mention to Fr. Long as it is the church’s remit.
JC said loop walks on bog road needs attention and asked if any funding available - EOM has made enquiries and awaiting to hear back from Mayo County Council about schemes available
RG asked if wooden bridge across channel at Silver Strand (down the Curragan Road) could be installed to improve accessibility to the strand for those with mobility difficulties.
MJ mentioned condition of road surfaces & laybys to Thallabawn poor and needs urgent attention- busy area in summertime. Lack of bins at beaches at busy times of year
EOM proposed to invite a member of the Louisburgh Killeen Heritage Group to join the Killeen Community Council - seconded by BC - also suggested a member of Parish Pastoral Council to join - not clear who from the Killeen area is on this council.
New grant schemes- EOM asked what is needed for the Community Centre - roof was mentioned either to replace or spray / cleandown roof of main hall. EOM to check if this could be eligible for funding- 3 quotes for work required to submit with grant applications.
