2023 Killeen Community Council elections
September 2023

The Killeen Community Council elections will take place in September. Everyone over 18 and resident in the community is eligible to vote and stand for election. Voting slips will be delivered to each household from 15th September and collected on 22nd September.

T​he term of office of the current community council is ending and elections are being organised. Voting slips will be distributed and collected in the council area. Any residents over 18 years of age is eligible to vote or be elected. This early notice might provide an opportunity to discuss and consider candidates in the different representative areas. The spacial layout of the representative areas and the current office holders are listed below. An extract of the constitution governing the elections is also listed below.

3. Membership

a. The membership of the Council shall consist of 
(1). those elected in an election held in accordance with Art 4b and whatever democratic procedure the Council by resolution of a General Meeting adopts; 
(2) representatives of voluntary organisations nominated according to Art 4b of the Constitution; 
(3) certain other persons who, by virtue of their personal attributes, have been co-opted by (1) and (2) above, from time to time.

b. The Council shall hold office for three years. It shall cease to hold office three years from the date of its first General Meeting.

c. Elections and nominations from organisations shall be held, so that a new Council shall be constituted to take office immediately the outgoing Council ceases to hold office.

d. In accordance with this the outgoing Council shall fix a date for the election.
All residents of the community of 18 years of age and over shall have the right to vote and stand for election to the Council.

4. Organisation

a. The Council shall consist of elected, nominated, and co-opted members in accordance with Art. 3a.I

b. It shall consist of
(1) fourteen elected members, two from each of the seven station areas of Killeen, elected by the people of that area;

(2) one member nominated by each voluntary organisation in the community which has held a General Meeting within the previous twelve months - except Macra na Tuatha, which shall have two nominated members;
(3) any number of people co-opted by (1) and (2), up to but not exceeding one-third of the total number of (1) and (2).
