After 10am mass in the Holy Family church, Killeen, there was an open invitation to all to come for a cuppa, food, chat, craic. A local man, John Kitterick treated us to some sean-nós dancing and sang a local song about ‘Louisburgh in the County Mayo'.  Another local lady, Aileen McDonnell read a beautiful poem called ‘The Chase’ , all about life and what is important. Another local lady and budding poet, Jackie Hedley (nee Taylor) wrote a poem all about Mayo Day especially for our event.
Some locals joined in the sing song. It was a lovely morning.  Kindly supported by The Department of Rural and Community Development
Mayo Day By Jackie Taylor Hedley

Mayo the county that’s the best
St. Patrick chose it over all the rest
County Mayo rugged and wild
You cannot help but be beguiled

Surfing, kayaking, hillwalking and more
You won’t be bored, that’s for sure
Steeped in history, culture abound
Step into Mayo, and it’s all around

Croagh Patrick stands majestic and tall
Its yearly pilgrimage beats them all
Knock Basilica is worldwide known
To visit there two popes have flown

Cong made famous by John Wayne
And Ashford Castle is far from plain
Westport Town voted ‘Best Place to Live’
Everything there and more to give

Trad music, recitation and a sing song
Bring us together and help us belong
Visitors come to Mayo by the score
For the thousand welcomes at the door

Mayo Jerseys and flags can be seen
Everywhere in the world Mayo people have been
The latest addition is at Everest base camp
Maybe the moon will be next for a stamp?

Our Mayo team, oh they play with such zest
Trying to bring Sam back to the west
Oh for the curse to be lifted, and a win maybe
Wouldn’t that be a fine sight to see?

Mayo God Help Us, what’s all this fuss?
Public transport- sure there’s hardly a bus
But it’s the best of Ireland Mayo does display
And that is why we have our own MAYO DAY
