Red Route
Red Route (5 miles / 8 km)
Staring at Killeen community centre, turn right towards Killeen Crossroads. Turn right towards the beach and continue to the first crossroads. Turn left at the crossroads and follow the road until our reach the coast. Turn left along the beach until you reach the edge of the lake, about half way along the beach. In this lake there are remains of a crannóg, which is a haven for wild birds. Follow the tarred road up a steep hill towards Ocean Lodge Hotel. (You will have to climb up a bank of stones to reach this road from the beach). From the Ocean Lodge Hotel continue on approx 100m, take right onto main road and next left towards Aillemore. (If you continue along the main road for a few more metres there is a standing stone to be seen in a field to your right.)
Continue along this road until you reach a 4 way intersection by a small bridge. At this point walkers can turn left to return to Killeen Crossroads, or right if you wish to visit the Megalithic tomb-known locally as Leaba Dhiarmada agus Ghráinne (Diarmuid and Gráinne’s bed). To go to the megalithic tomb, follow the grass road up the steep hill. Go through a gate and continue for approx. 200m. Take a right towards the mountain for approx. 500m and you will see a mound of stones which is an ancient burial ground (the megalithic tomb) known as a court cairn.
You must return by the same route until you come to the 4 way intersection again. Take the road veering left on the opposite side of the road to return to Killeen.
